Ephesus Ancient City

Ephesus is the second largest ancient city of the whole world. It was founded on the harbour where once the Kaistros River (Meander) met the Aegean Sea. But it lost its economical importance as the soil carried by the same river filled its shore for kilometres inside the sea in time. So it was abandoned eventually until it was started to be excavated by John Turtle Wood, an English Engineer who originally aimed to find "The Temple of Artemis", one of the seven wonders of ancient World. Today this temple is also in the borders of Selcuk city with only one pillar and some ruins left of its ancient grace.

Ephesus with an area of around 930.000 m² is most famous with its amphitheatre, Agora, Celcius Library, Hadrianus Temple and its marble roads Ephesus is the first city in the whole world that was built mainly of marble.

There is no public transportation directly to Ephesus but Kusadasi- Selcuk minibuses leaves you on the plain road that you can walk to Ephesus for 2,1 km's. The walking distance from the south gate to the North gate is around 2 km's.

The distance from Kusadasi to Ephesus is 17 or 22 km according to which route you use and which gate you get to.
