It is situated at the top of the Bulbul Mountain, 9 km's far from the city of Selcuk and 28 km's from Kusadasi.

According to tale St. John came to Ephesus with Virgin Mary, 4 to 6 years after the crucifixion of Jesus. The tale is strengthened with the visions of Catherine Emmerich, a German nun. This house was lately discovered by a group of Lazarist priests which is believed to be the palace where Virgin Mary spent her last days.

The place was only known to local people until 1891 but attracted the attention of the entire World after the visits by Pope Paul VI in 1967 and Pope John Paul II in 1979.Its popularity increased enormously and the site became a frequent destination for the pilgrims. The building has been kept in its original form except the cruciform building topped with a dome as it is restored contemporarily.

A religious ceremony is held every year on 15th of August here, gathering many people from all around the World.
